Brazil Santo Daime Religion

 

The Santo Daime religion, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We were making a series of films about the arts of South America. My assignments were Brazil, Peru and Bolivia. 

Ayahuasca is a big part of the Santo Daime religion. I could have taken some but refused. There were lots of sick buckets.

NORTHERN IRELAND AND DONEGAL

  In July 1987 I was in Northern Ireland. We filmed in Belfast and then focussed in on a Protestant village called Milford in South Armagh, right on the edge of 'bandit country' (as the programme publicity called it). This was for a BBC Bookmark programme called In The Blood , directed by Pavel Pawlikowski. Paul went on to make award-winning feature films like My Summer of Love , Ida and, his Oscar winner, Cold War . We spent several days in the village getting to know everybody, and then went with them to the annual Orange Day parade in Armagh. Two memories stand out: the massive boom of the drums that went right through you, and having to lie flat on the floor of the coach as we passed through Catholic areas.  When filming was over, I kept the hire car, took a long weekend's leave, and drove up to the Giant's Causeway. SAIPAN

Saipan is the largest island of the Northern Mariana Islands, a commonwealth of the United States in the western Pacific Ocean. It lies just north of Guam, south of Japan, east of the Philippines and west of Hawaii. Our focus there was the importance Saipain played in ww2, with many of the battle's tanks and armory still scattered about the island and beneath the sea. The Battle of Saipan, from 15 June to 9 July 1944, was one of the major campaigns of World War II. The United States Marine Corps and United States Army landed on the beaches of the south-western side of the island and, after more than three weeks in heavy fighting, captured the island from the Japanese. The battle cost the Americans 3,426 killed and 10,364 wounded. Of the estimated 30,000 Japanese defenders, only 921 were taken prisoner. The weapons used, and the tactics of close quarter fighting, also resulted in high civilian casualties. Some 20,000 Japanese civilians perished during the battle, including over 1,00...

The Crew

  I only wanted a macro lens, but this  Apexel lens kit for mobile phone  comes with all sorts of other goodies. Mine's an Android MotoG7, but I imagine the clip system will work on most phones.  I've abandoned the Kodak App and am now just using the macro lens with my phone camera and light box.  Still a way to go to get the best light and focus, hopefully I'll have mastered the mini-tripod by next time.  So, back to the lucky dip.
