The Crew



 



I only wanted a macro lens, but this Apexel lens kit for mobile phone comes with all sorts of other goodies. Mine's an Android MotoG7, but I imagine the clip system will work on most phones. I've abandoned the Kodak App and am now just using the macro lens with my phone camera and light box. 

Still a way to go to get the best light and focus, hopefully I'll have mastered the mini-tripod by next time.

Happy crew days. And a rare assistant camerawoman, yay. I remember she and I sneaking off for a cheeky swim after we'd arrived at our hotel, a series of huts beside a lagoon. That evening as we sat on the thatched terrace sipping the best Pina Coladas ever, the hotel owners told us that the lagoon was home to saltwater crocodiles. The largest crocodiles of all, who usually swallow their prey whole.

March, 1987 The Philippines, what a place. An edgy Asian Wild West, full of music and the loveliest people. I once returned there for a holiday on my own. I stayed in Manila (in a hotel that turned out to be a brothel) and then travelled down to the stunningly beautiful island of Boracay. Those slides will surface eventually.  I worked on several films there, including  Bayan Ko Pilipinas, (1987) a profile of the film director Lino Brocka .  Lino Brocka Lino was a cult hero, a folk hero, man of the people. We filmed a march to the Palace, days after several nuns had been fired at, with Lino (and us) at the very front. This wasn't long after the Mendiola Massacre. My first experience of a political march. What I remember most is the flow. Of being carried along by the emotion and the fear. A strange, silent purpose. South Korea

First birthday party I was in South Korea several times through the 80s. It was a really difficult place for a Western woman to work in. The start of many shocks came early in my first visit. We were all having drinks with an official. He had brought his wife along, but said, right in front of both of us, that they must all go out again and leave the women behind next time so that they could have a really good time.  And they did! With the head honcho of the country's biggest car manufacturer. Honcho joked that he'd take me out separately another night. Thank God he didn't, or did I refuse the calls, I hope so. I can't remember.  Not long after, a hotel security guard tried to throw me out as a suspected prostitute.  I found that funny. But there was a relentlessness to the insults that just kept on coming. Zaire (The Congo) - Under African Skies

Continuing my random selection of a box of slides from storage, next up is Zaire (now known as DRC, The Democratic Republic of The Congo), around 1988.    Under African Skies was a BBC2 series about the music of Africa.  The programme actually exists on YouTube, a very blurred scratchy version of it, dubbed from a Danish TV showing,  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBaUo7TtZxo . There was also a BBC album: That's one of my photos, top L. 'Kinshasa is Africa's undisputed musical heart,' says the The Culture Trip .  Rumba , which developed into soukous, is impossible not to dance to. I remember a man in front of a stage whose movements were so fluid it looked like he was made of elastic.  Artists  in our film included  Papa Wemba , Ray Lema, Franco, and Zaiko Langa Langa.
